Honestly, I wish Cameron Crowe still made films like this instead of, well, bad movies. Together, Cusack and Skye have incredible chemistry to help make this sweet high school dramedy come to life and feel fully authentic. With iconic moment after iconic moment, Say Anything crafts a truly adorable romance that provides moments of adorableness and moments of pure comedy. Featuring fantastic performances from John Cusack and Ione Skye, the film is the quintessential coming of age film. I love coming of age films and Say Anything is certainly no exception. John Mahoney is first-rate as Diane's father, a single parent who wants only the best for his brilliant daughter but who harbors a serious secret that the IRS is investigating. Their budding romance is put to the test when Diane has to choose between pursuing her academic dreams and spending time with him. Diane falls for Lloyd, whose goal is to spend as much time with her as possible. Lloyd's dream comes true when Diane accepts his invitation to a graduation party. There is only one thing that all-around nice guy Lloyd wants for his high school graduation: a date with beautiful valedictorian Diane Court (Skye). Diane falls for Lloyd, whose John Cusack plays Lloyd Dobler-an average guy with a penchant for kickboxing. I'd say that girls and boys of ten and up with benefit greatly from holding the behaviours portrayed as a gold standard.Summary: John Cusack plays Lloyd Dobler-an average guy with a penchant for kickboxing. They have sex, but it's not shown and its in the context of a profoundly loving and respectful relationship, which is, in my opinion, a better version of reality than never showing anything at all. Yes, they do have sex - yes there is drinking - but if you watch it with your kids then you can manage these issues. It did for me - but only because I learned to walk away from the jerks who didn't treat me with the kind of respect that is modelled here.

The story is deeply romantic and online some have commented that love like that doesn't exist. The film is as much the girl's story as the boy's and they are excellent role models both.

Nevertheless it's a good teachable moment. While this is in stark contrast to the way that the central couple communicate - in the film no one steps in - which I can't immagine happening today. There's a scene where a couple walk past the main characters and she repeatedly tells the boy to leave her alone and he repeatedly fails to do so. What interests me about this film is that it is (almost) waaaay ahead of it's time in terms of values and the way women are treated.
